For the person who drives home after a few too many beers at the bar, “success” is making it home without getting pulled over, and without wreaking any havoc along the way. But for the myriad police departments across the state, “success” looks a little different.

In this case, the “success” refers to the recent DUI crackdown conducted by MSP in conjunction with police departments and sheriff’s offices in 26 counties across the state.  The “Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign ran from March 17th to April 7th, encompassing spring break, St Patrick’s Day, and March Madness.

According to a press release from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, officers made a significant dent in the number of drunk drivers during this period. All told, there were 532 drunk driving arrests, along with 682 citations for driving on a suspended license, and 653 citations for uninsured drivers. There were also 350 drug-related arrests that resulted from the crackdown.

It was noted by a few newspapers that the numbers seemed lower than in previous crackdowns. As a result, there was speculation about whether or not this particular crackdown had been as effective as former efforts. But, according to police, the lower numbers are actually a good sign.

Statistics show that a decrease in drunk driving arrests and citations are an indicator that the state’s anti-drunk driving programs are working. Television ads that vividly portray the consequences of driving drunk, or breaking the road rules in any other capacity, followed up by strict enforcement provides what is known as “high visibility enforcement”.

But while the battle may be won, the war is not yet over. Officials say that there has been a slow and steady decline in alcohol related deaths here in Michigan, which is certainly positive. But statistics show that one third of alcohol related deaths here in the state still include alcohol as a factor. Which means that while there is progress, there is still much work left to be done.
