American holidays tend to be all about relaxation, friends and family, and good food and drinks. But it’s the ‘drinks’ part of that equation that can lead to trouble for you If you drive anywhere in Michigan with a BAC of .08 or higher in Michigan, you’re in the danger zone. The police certainly intend to see to it that you don’t do much driving if you’ve been drinking this Labor Day with their annual anti-drunk driving campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”!
When do I need to start watching for the cops?
Well, you always need to watch out for the police if you’re drinking and driving. So, as always, our advice is to never drive if you’ve consumed any amount of alcohol or drugs. This drunk driving detection effort campaign has already started, so the answer to watching out is probably “before now!” Starting about a week ago, on August 14th, and continuing through September 2nd, The Michigan State Police and local law enforcement agencies all over the state will be stepping up patrols in their communities, hoping to save lives by getting drunk drivers off the road. So if you plan to enjoy a few drinks with friends or family, remember to choose a designated driver, or call an Uber. The Kronzek Firm agrees – the life you save might be your own.
Keep your eyes open and your beer closed!
This particular campaign involves not only the MSP, but city and township cops throughout Michigan, and even a number of local sheriff’s departments. There will be a lot more cops hitting the roads, especially later at night and on the weekend, watching for the classic signs of intoxication. Things like speeding, weaving in and out of your lane, or slowing down and speeding up intermittently can all be indicators that the diver is under the influence.Remember that under the influence includes both alcohol and drugs.
Last year’s Labor Day was deadly for Michigan folks!
According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, twelve people died in 12 traffic crashes during the 2018 Labor Day holiday period. Of those twelve deaths, six were related to alcohol. That means the percentage of alcohol-related fatalities was about 11 times higher than in all other crashes in our state. This year, law enforcement is hoping to reduce those numbers from 12 to zero. We love that idea.
Drunk driving isn’t the only things cops look for!
While drunk drivers are central to the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, alcohol consumption isn’t the only thing the cops will be watching for this Labor Day. Anyone who isn’t buckled up, kids travelling in car seats that were poorly installed, and drivers under the influence of drugs are all on the hit list. So make sure you buckle up, stay sober, and check to make sure your kids are safe!
