The holidays can be really dangerous, from a driver’s point of view!
When Andy Williams wrote about Christmas in his famous carol, he said there’d be “parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting, and caroling out in the snow!” What he didn’t mention in that glorious list, is the significant rise in drunk driving incidents every year at Christmas time. Why? Well, there isn’t much that rhymes with “drunk driving.” And besides, it was supposed to be a happy song! And drunk driving rarely has happy results but those that have travelled that road in Michigan already know.
Last year saw an increase of fatal car crashes resulting from alcohol use!
So, there’s good news and bad news … which would you like first? The good news? OK, here goes – the good news is that for about a decade there was a steady decline in drunk driving incidents here in Michigan. That’s great, right? However, the bad news is that in the last few years, that trend has shifted, and now we’re headed in the opposite direction! Wait, what?

It started just a couple of days ago. In five counties around the state the Michigan State Police’s roadside drug test pilot program began. Which means that right now in Berrien, Delta, Kent, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties right here in The Great Lakes State, officers can drug test you right on the side of the road! So how does it work?

Would lowering the BAC in Michigan help reduce the number of alcohol related deaths?
