Fatal Crash Results in DUI Arrest
A fatal crash that took place on I-94 left one person dead, one person unaccounted for, and one behind bars. According to Michigan State Police who responded to the scene and headed up the subsequent investigation, this case is a little more complex than the usual fatal DUI collision, but no less tragic.
According to the responding officer, the fatal crash took place in the early morning hours on a recent Saturday. It involved three vehicles, and happened as a chain reaction to the first impact. It all started when a GMC pickup truck, driven by a driver who is suspected of being intoxicated at the time, was unable to stop. He crashed into the back of a Mercedes, which was pushed forward into a Chevrolet Impala parked on the shoulder.
The driver of the pickup was arrested at the scene. He was suspected of being intoxicated at the time, and was arrested for drunk driving. He was later transported to the Wayne County Jail, where is currently being held.
The driver of the Impala, 22-year-old Andre Thurmond from Livonia, was killed in the collision. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The passenger in the Impala, however, sustained only minor injuries. But the mystery lies with the driver of the Mercedes, the car that unintentionally got caught in the middle. Because that person is nowhere to be found.
The driver fled on foot after the collision, and a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed open alcohol containers. As of now there is much speculation about who that person is, and why they fled the scene of the accident. Perhaps it was simply to avoid the repercussions of being charged for open intoxicants? At the moment, no one knows.
As of now, the only person facing charges is the driver who likely caused the collision in the first place. He will be charged with operating while intoxicated, although there is always the possibility that other charges may follow. And as for the mystery driver, we will just have to wait and see.
