– And in a Sea of Trouble!
While Benjamin Franklin is claimed to have said that wine is proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy, Shakespeare also points out that too much of a good thing isn’t good at all. Which is usually the case when it comes to alcohol, as someone drunk driving in Mason County recently learned. A 65-year-old man from the village of Free Soil has been arrested for operating while intoxicated. But unlike most drunk driving accidents where police show up at the scene of the collision to conduct the arrest, this drunk driver was arrested about a half a mile away from his car – which was underwater! According to reports from the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, October 26th, the man was travelling north on Benson Rd near the county line. But he didn’t stop at the stop sign where Benson Rd dead ends into Sugar Grove Rd, which winds along the edge of Round Lake. And as a result, his vehicle ended up in the lake. Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole says that the incident was reported at about 3:30 am, and that the man managed to get his vehicle “about 200 feet out into the water”, which is no small feat. Somehow, though, he was able to escape his vehicle and return to dry land, where he was found walking by Sheriff’s deputies shortly afterwards. The intoxicated driver was uninjured. Deputies say he was about half a mile away from the lake by the time they arrived, walking on the side of the road. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated. No other information has been made public regarding this case yet. While this case may be a bit unusual, persons arrested for OWI – whether in the water or on dry land- need to have an excellent OWI defense attorney helping them.
