Truck Crashes Into Church
The congregation of the Free Methodist Church in Portage, MI is now missing a chunk of their church following an incident that occurred in the early hours of the morning on June 11th.
A 69-year-old man from Gobles, in Van Buren county, MI, was driving drunk that night. He was traveling westbound on Centre street, in a 2008 Chevy Silverado, when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off the side of the road.
First he drove through a landscaped bed and crashed his truck into the side of the church, gouging out a large section of the brick work. Then he attempted to back out and drive away. In the process, the truck struck a tree and simply stayed there.
Shortly after 2 am, officers from the Portage Department of Public Safety received a call that a vehicle had crashed into a tree on W. Center Ave. When they arrived, they found the man, still inside his truck where it had come to rest up against a tree.
The driver is completely uninjured, but police arrested him for operating under the influence. It is possible that he may face additional charges for property damage. Fire officials were summoned to assess the damage to the church later that day.
