DUI Charges: NOT How You Want to End School Year

School’s almost out! Prom is just around the corner, and summer is stretched before you like a veritable buffet of delights. And you want to enjoy it, not spend it in jail, or doing required community service, or without the freedom of a driver’s license. The best way to avoid this, of course, is to avoid getting arrested on DUI charges. Read more ›

Judge J. Cedric Simpson Accused of Acting Improperly

Judges Judging Judges: Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission

Most judges judge the actions and choices of civilians. Every now and again one of them will be required to judge an attorney or a police officer – a member of the law enforcement community. But it is rare that one judge gets to judge another, at least in an official capacity.

The Judicial Tenure Commission’s Executive Director Paul J. Fisher announced that the commission believes that Washtenaw County district court Judge J. Cedric Simpson acted improperly on all counts. The evidence was reviewed by retired Ingham County Judge Peter Houk, who agreed with the commission’s findings. Read more ›

Milford Man Arrested for 3rd DUI

Drunk, Bloodied, and Charged With 3rd DUI

Usually when a police officer notices a car slowing down and speeding up and slipping in and out of their lane at 3 in the morning, they assume that the driver is inebriated. And most of the time, they’re right. What they don’t usually assume is that the driver would be bloody too. (No, we’re not cussing. We mean that quite literally.) Read more ›

Murder Charge for Pontiac Drunk Driver

Child’s Death Results in Murder Charge

Very few people, when having a few drinks before they drive off into the sunset, think about the possible consequences of their choices. 24-year-old Ieshia Barnes from Pontiac certainly didn’t. After all, if she had known that those drinks would end up costing a child’s life and earn her a murder charge in exchange, chances are, she wouldn’t have had them. Read more ›

DUI pardons: a how to guide for beginners

There was much public uproar, fed by a scandalized media, after it was discovered that in December of last year, Governor Snyder extended a rare DUI pardon. The beneficiary of this rather unusual generosity was none other than Alan Gocha Jr., a politically connected defense attorney from Oakland County. But now another attorney has decided to jump on the bandwagon by creating the state’s first ever “how to guide” for getting a DUI pardoned by the governor. Read more ›

No Contest Plea for DUI Causing Death

In the Kent County Circuit Court, Michelle Carmelita Lerma appeared recently before Judge Mark Trusock where she pled no contest to a single count of operating while intoxicated causing death. In return, the prosecution agreed to drop a single charge of reckless driving causing death.

The accident that put her in court that day for a DUI causing death was devastating, putting her in a wheelchair while she recovered, and taking an unsuspecting man’s life. Read more ›

Drunk Driving Accident…. or was it?

Imagine this. You are sitting in your car at an intersection, waiting for the light to change so you can go on your merry way. All of a sudden you notice a car barreling towards you in your rearview mirror. The driver is looking down, not paying attention to the road. And worse, he’s not slowing down either.

This was the case for Tom Versosky, whose car was completely crushed by the impact of a Chevrolet Silverado that slammed into him from behind. The impact forced Verosky’s vehicle into three other cars also waiting at the intersection, causing extensive damage. Read more ›

Hung Over Driving – Is It Really Any Better Than Drunk Driving?

Hung Over Driving Could Still be Dangerous

Most people know that having a few drinks (or a few too many) and then driving themselves home from the bar might not be their smartest choice. But the majority of those same people would think nothing of getting up the next morning and driving off to work, having taken a few aspirin for the headache.

But recent studies are showing that this may actually be a pretty bad idea. In one of the studies, researchers from Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the University of the West of England in the U.K. put study participants through a series of driving tests that mimicked highway driving. As part of the study, all of the participants had consumed about 10 drinks each the night before. Read more ›
